Outstanding National Security Summit!

International President David L. Hickey welcomed over 200 Locals leaders from around the country at the National Security Summit for a two-day training program on August 14-15 at the Best Western Sterling Inn.  A dynamic agenda included special speakers Jim Statham, FMCS, who spoke about “Communication and Negotiations, and its Application in the Workplace”.   International Secretary Treasurer Dwight Duley presented a “Finance Overview and Review of the Local Election” process.  Special guest speaker, Kathryn A. VanDagens, Arbitrator, gave a powerful and informative presentation on “What One Arbitrator Wants You to Know About Arbitration”.  Keynote Speaker, Mark Gaffney, President AFL-CIO-Michigan (retired) gave a dynamic presentation on the “Challenges of Today’s Labor Movement”. Gordon A. Gregory, General Counsel, provided an in-depth overview of “Workplace Justice: Effective Use of the Grievance Procedure”.  Henry Lakes and the SPFPA Benefits Team provided updates on the impact of the Affordable Care Act and were available during the conference to assist members and answer questions relating to SPFPA Benefits.  President Hickey engaged attendees with questions regarding the SPFPA, grievance handling and arbitration, followed by a Leadership Forum where Locals were invited to share their stories about achieving interest and involvement at a membership level.  The theme of the Summit is “Call Down the Thunder”, when you need good leadership, SPFPA Leaders are here to bring it and get the job done.   Vice Presidents Mark Crawford, Rick O’Quinn and Don Eagle, along with Directors Joe McCray and Guy Thomas shared accomplishments and challenges at the International level.  Local Leaders took advantage of purchasing the wide range of promotional products that were sold at the conference and always available on the website at www.spfpa.org.  The best part of the conference was getting the opportunity to join together in solidarity, visiting with old friends and welcoming new friends to the SPFPA family.  It was an outstanding event and SPFPA is proud to lead the Nation as the  “Authority of Security Unions”. Great job everyone!
